In 1989 the Alresford Town Trustees, who are responsible for The Avenue, gave permission for the Rotary Club to plant daffodil and narcissi bulbs along the grassy verges to welcome visitors to the town. Accordingly, with some help from members of Alresford and District Horticultural Society, pupils of Perins School and youth and community groups, the Club began a tradition of planting each year. Originally, over 9000 bulbs were donated by Club Members and local suppliers and the spring display has now extended to the Cheriton entrance to the town, by the Cricketers, and to the A31 roundabout at Ropley. Every autumn, more bulbs are added and the existing ones fed to keep a bright welcome to Alresford from Rotary and the town. In 2010 Rotary added to the display, by planting 5000 crocus bulbs at the town entrance, when approached from Bishop's Sutton. The purple flowers are a reminder of the world-wide project that Rotary is committed to - the elimination of polio from the world.
